Question about regnum points

Hello, I was logging in tonight and saw a syrtis running past me, so I proceeded with attacking him and then sorting out the location of the powerbook and resizing the chat window, and then when I was done and he was dead... nothing - no realmpoints, so I was curious if there's some sort of timer, where you can't get realmpoints until a certain amount of time you've been logged in? Because it's rather annoying to not get realmpoints after a well-deserved kill

After that I charged a group and died, but got realmpoints after I came back and killed some, but it's that first kill at login time I'm curious about, if it happens again, should I just run away and wait for this supposed (assumed) timer to go out, or is it safe to kill kill kill, and this was just a coincidence?
