There are many minor Open Source projects that never take off and do not developed properly.
But that is because they are not interesting enough for the free developers to help.
Look at Planeshift, this project developed very well because it is interesting.
To start up a project from the start is very hard as not many people will want to help you until they see some results, if they like the results - they might help you.
So Eternal Lands just wasn't appealing and good enough to invest in.
Something that I can't say about Regnum.
Take other very good and different example.
There was a game named Ryzom which wasn't open source and run only under DirectX, but the company got bankrupt and waned to sell thier source code and art.
Many Linux users contributed to the fund to buy the source
They reached almost 200.000 € in a few months.
but sadly another big company bought it, this means that Linux users want to invest in games AND development of the games.
they knew this game won't be free even if they bought it, they knew they will pay a monthly charge for maintaining the servers and they knew they got a lot of work to develop an OpenGL version with native Linux client.
but they still tried and payed for it.
