Try to add :

Option "SwapbuffersWait" "0"

In the device section of your xorg.conf. Maybe it will help a bit.

Anyways I don't think you'll get smooth FPS unless you get a more recent card and use proprietary driver.

ok I will try it, and I see another option that may help.

Option "AccelDFS" "true"

If you have an AGP-based card then you may also want to add the following line at the same location into the configuration file.

see this article for some information:

However AccelDFS may be very unstable on some AGP cards. So be careful.

I know, I saw a commnent in opensuse forum, it says that it works OK in a X800 card.

actually, I'm just trying to increase my performance to the max level in order to see what can do for me the radeon driver. It is really more stable than the ATI propietary but with poor performance. <- If I can reduce the diference in performance... I will be very happy.

mmm I have other problem. I have installed driconf but It doesnt have the same options that other people. for explample I only have 2 tabs and there is nothing about Hyperz or S3TC. is something wrong in the instalation or is my card in unsuported?

no it's probably fine. I think that is because you use mesa gallium drivers, and not older classic mesa drivers.

Your S3TC textures probably work, otherwise you should see it in Regnum or you would get a error message before you can enter.

driconf isn't very useful at all for gallium drivers.

For r300-r500 based cards you can expect max out at around 60% of the performance the proprietary driver was giving you, I've seen it do better but only for obscure things. You're actually getting similar FPS to what I have on an IGP two generations later than yours, so be happy

Well,

the point is, Is possible to play with the opensource drivers . actually with my card: X1650 Pro AGP regnum online in Full screen mode at 1024x768 safemode runs with 19 FPS average.
by using Gallium 3d 0.4

it doesnt matter if you use compiz. 4 desktops or change the resolution. the game has the same performance all the time.

in addition, I had different results about the first post. I can run the game in SM2 and fixed but with the problem in the textures. I have never seen a black screen like previous comments in the post. but in safe mode, runs perfectly

sincerelly, I guess I do something wrong because it doesnt matter what do you do in the Xorg.conf seems to be the same thing all the time. there is no improvements after changes.

thanks all for the answer

Well, one last thing : Try to use the very latest Gallium3D stack you may get better performance.

Here's a PPA to make things easy : https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

I'm using the lastest version. see the GLXinfo below:

name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.4
OpenGL vendor string: X.Org R300 Project
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on ATI RV530
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.12-devel
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20

I am using the X-org ppa in order to have the lastest updates

now works perfectly in fixed mode without safe mode.

with mesa git (8.1 dev)

there are many cases open in order to make it work on SM2
